Top 5 Tuesday – Winter Saviours (on a Wednesday eeeeekk)

I’ve been terribly disorganised with this series – I do the initial post, and then POOF! Nothing else!  This post was supposed to go up yesterday, but the day just completely got away from me.

Well I’m back with another Top 5 Tuesday Wednesday post – this time it’s all about the 5 products that are keeping my skin nourished and smooth as winter starts to seriously hit.

Durban has been hit by a serious chilly spell in the last few weeks – we had warm summery weather and suddenly it was just gone.  No gradual cooling down at all.  We’re lucky in that the majority of our days are still warm and sunny, but at night and in the mornings it’s been icy cold.  Plus my seasonal allergies have been especially bad this year, which has required me to be popping anti-histamines like Smarties – my skin and eyes feel sandpaper-dry.

Below are the 5 things that have been soothing, moisturising and nourishing my skin: –

My homemade body scrub (recipe courtesy of Pinterest)

I love a good scrub, but they’re often so pricey and just don’t do much at all.  I originally saw this as a firming scrub recipe on Pinterest, to help tighten any cellulite on your legs.  It’s just so unbelievably good that I use it all over.  It’s basically a mixture of brown sugar, olive oil, coconut oil and used filter coffee grounds.  It smells divine and you can play with the amounts of each ingredient (more oil if you prefer or less if you want it more scrubby).  My skin feels baby soft after this and it gets off every little bit of dry skin.

Palmer’s Raw Shea Body Lotion

This lotion is all natural, smells delicious and sinks straight into my skin, leaving it incredibly hydrated and soft, without a greasy layer on top.  It also contains no parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, gluten, sulphates or dyes, it’s made with ethically and sustainably sourced Shea butter, as well as Marula Oil and Oatmeal extract.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant

This is my second tube, and the unfragranced one, but in hindsight I prefer the original.  I always faff around with silly lipbalms that don’t end up doing anything to help my dry lips (i.e. the new Essence Lip Oil – that stuff made my lips actually peel after 2 days!).  I then always end up coming back to this.  I’ve used a whole tube before this, as well as two tin pots of it that my Mom found in duty-free on one of her overseas trips.  I started using this again about 2 weeks ago, and I haven’t looked back.  It’s a cult product for a reason!

Earthwise cuticle oil

I’ve only ever found this product at Simply Tipped salon, when I get my nails done.  I’ve tried some pretty darn expensive cuticle oils, and none of them come close to this one (and this is around R30 – a complete steal for something that works so well).  I grabbed a bottle when I last had my nails done, as my other cuticle oil just wasn’t cutting it – the Solar Oil that so many salons use.  This is my third bottle, and it never disappoints, I can literally see results in a couple of days!  I’m not sure how to order this, or where else to find it, but you can email the address on the label (earthwise@wol.co.za) or contact Simply Tipped on 0814711737.  Better yet, if you’re based in Durbs, make a booking to get your nails done!!!! They’re incredibly affordable and do by far the best job I’ve ever had done on my nails.

Soap & Glory Endless Glove 2-in-1 Moisture Mask & Hand Cream

This can be used as a super rich and protective hand cream, or as an overnight hand mask.  I’ve been using it more as the latter, slathering it on my hands at night when I’ve climbed into bed.  It doesn’t feel greasy at all, despite being filled with 8 different oils and butters.  To me it actually feels almost watery?  It’s supposed to provide moisture for 12 hours after you apply it, provided you don’t keep washing your hands, so I figured that using it while I sleep is best.  And it works so so well! Nothing will ever top my Hand Food hand cream (I have a fresh, unused tube in my drawer, waiting for this to be finished), but it’s great!

Do you have any products that you swear by for winter?
