Trip to Joburg (and haul!)

I was lucky enough last year, to win a competition on the Cosmopolitan website – a two night stay, for two, in a junior suite at the Radisson Blu Gautrain hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg.

In May we made our booking with the hotel for the last weekend of August this year (the prize expired at the end of August).  The BF and I had grand plans to hit up Gold Reef City for an adrenaline rush, and walk Sandton City and shop till we dropped – I DESPERATELY wanted to visit the Urban Decay store.  Unfortunately, this didn’t quite end up being the scenario, as I ended up having surgery the week we were meant to go.  While it was quite a painful op, it wasn’t anything too serious, so luckily we could still have our holiday (seeing as if we didn’t go, we’d have to forfeit the prize).  I just wouldn’t be able to do anything strenuous.  I was seriously disappointed by the turn of events, but after a week of lying in bed and resting, the cabin-fever was bad, and I was just grateful for a change of scenery.

We set off on our trip first thing on Friday morning – we’d decided to road trip and drive the 5/6 hours from Durban to Joburg.

I can’t be road-trippin’ without my tea!

We arrived after a long journey, and a delightful rear-ending less than 30 minutes of arriving in Joburg.  After our trip to the police station to report the accident for insurance purposes, we finally arrived at the hotel, hot and sticky and irritable.  Why was Joburg so hot, when winter wasn’t even over!?!

Our check in was a breeze, and the reception staff were friendly and so helpful.  We even had a handwritten welcome note, and a bowl of lovely fruit to greet us in our room.

Lovely fresh fruit bowl.

Hand-written welcome note.

Our little table & chairs, and our view (much more impressive at night though).

All rooms are fitted with the regular kettle and tea/coffee goodies, but junior suites and up also offer a Nespresso coffee machine, with 3 choices of coffee pods.  I love me some Nespresso, so this was an exciting extra!

They also had This Works as the brand of toiletries in the bathroom, a brand I’ve long wanted to try out.  They smelled gorgeous!

Coffee!

I could stand to be corrected, but I think there was Egyptian cotton on the bed.. bliss!

This Works toiletries, in the In Transit scent.

Delicious gin martini!

It had been a super long day, so we settled in to our room with a cocktail each from the bar downstairs, and relaxed a bit before having a light, but delicious dinner in the bar – I completely forgot to take photos as we were reaching hangry-territory, and there was just no time.  The chicken strips there are the best I’ve ever had though, incredibly tender and tasty.

We hit the breakfast buffet hard the following morning, preparing for a day of shopping (my lovely BF even organised a wheelchair so my semi-crippled self wouldn’t have to try and walk around Sandton City).

Fresh honey, straight from the hive.

Fruit smoothie and cucumber/lemon iced water.

A ‘Virgin Mary’ bar – no vodka here!

Deeelish!  I may have added too much Tabasco though.

Amazing tea selection.

Pastries – the BEST pain au chocolat I’ve ever eaten.

Big range of fresh fruit and yoghurt.

Squeeze your own orange juice!  Or be lazy and pour some that someone else has squeezed.

On our trip to Sandton we squeezed in coffee at Tashas (I had my favourite, the Cherry and Lemongrass Granita), and a lunch at The Big Mouth (where we dined on Prawn and Cream Cheese Dim Sum and Rock Shrimp Tempura California Rolls).  We also shopped a HECK of a lot.

The main place that I wanted to stop at – everything I hoped for and more!

We also managed to get hold of some delicious goodies from Krispy Kreme (plain glazed donut, New York cheesecake donut and PB&J donut), Starbucks (I had the strawberries and cream iced drink, and the BF had the regular coffee frappe) and Maverick and Jane (amazing gourmet popcorn).

Finally, I also treated myself to a LOT of lovely things…

A funky makeup bag.

Urban Decay – All Nighter foundation, Naked Skin concealer and Dive Bar single eyeshadow.

Kiehl’s – Creamy Eye Treatment, Ultra Facial Moisturizer and a sample of the Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate.

H & M – Some beautiful satin sleep-shorts and some superhero underwear.

H & M – Batman sweatpants.

After a weekend packed with amazing food and drinks, shopping, snacking, sleeping on gorgeously-soft sheets, and yet more snacking, we headed back home to Durbs.

A big thank you to the Radisson Blu Gautrain hotel in Sandton, for really making us feel special, and the superb food and service.
