This winter has seemed particularly brutal to my skin. I don’t know about you, but last winter, even though the weather seemed colder, I feel like my skin is so much drier this year. Winter is the time that I up my game when it comes to caring for my skin. I use richer products that are designed for drier skin, and I take a little extra time to care for and pamper it.
The following products are the ones I’ve been reaching for consistently – some are annual favourites for the colder, drier season, and others are newbies to the list. You can check out last year’s post on My Winter Essentials HERE.
I received a lovely drop from Mixa recently, and while I received both of their new hand creams, this is the only one that I’ve cracked open so far. And I haven’t been able to put it down!
I was worried that with coriander oil, this would be a little greasy on my hands, but it’s not greasy at all. It leaves my skin so soothed and hydrated, and sure, it’s a little richer than the body lotion I adore from Mixa, but it’s been keeping my hands so moisturised without the sticky feeling. I apply hand cream throughout the day, but this is the one I’ve been grabbing at night when I get into bed.
If your skin is super dry, you’ll probably like the Restoring hand cream more, as it’s designed for very dry hands, while this is just for dry hands.
I am OBSESSED with this lotion. In fact it’s virtually all I’ll use on my body these days! I have slightly sensitive/reactive skin, it’s strange that some fragranced goods irritate my skin, and others are not a problem at all. By sticking with this one body lotion from Mixa, that’s designed specifically for dry and sensitive skin, I’ve not only had zero reactions, but the little bumps on my arms have lessened with consistent use of this product.
It doesn’t have a fragrance per say (it’s unfragranced, but so many ‘unfragranced’ products still have a medicinal smell that is far from pleasant), but the smell of this lotion is comforting to me. I can only put it down to the oat milk! The lotion feels fabulous and nourishing on my skin, yet it doesn’t leave a greasy layer – it absorbs quickly, yet your skin feels hydrated all day long.
I no longer bother buying anything but the 400ml bottles now, and I go through probably one and a half of these a month. My darling friend Simone from An Ordinary Girl was horrified at this – but I apply this after every single shower, which is most of the time twice a day (quick shower morning and night, I’m a little OCD about feeling clean).
P.S. I have seen this at my local Checkers on special for R35 for a 400ml bottle (not sure if it’s all Checkers or just my local one), but it’s also on 3 for 2 at Clicks!
I must admit – when I first received this I was a little doubtful that it would be rich enough for very dry areas of skin (feet, elbows, etc). I mean – it’s a mousse, and that’s usually a much thinner, lighter formula.
WRONG! This mousse comes out looking light and airy, but it feels buttery as it melts into your skin. To be fair, the smell isn’t my favourite, it’s one of those unfragranced items that have a strange medicinal smell to it, yet it works so well that it doesn’t bother me. I apply this to my feet every single night, massage the remaining mousse onto my elbows (and grab Hubby’s if I can get him to sit still long enough), and my feet feel freshly pedicured, even though my last pedicure was over a month ago!
The product is pricey, but a small amount goes a very long way – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve squirted a golf ball sized amount of mousse, and it’s far too much. In fact, even half that amount is too much!
A hydrating facial spray is a must year round, but in the winter I go a bit crazy with spray. After cleansing and before serum, and again after serum. I spritz before makeup and after makeup, and keep a travel size in my handbag to quench thirsty skin whenever the need strikes.
I love all of the Mario Badescu facial sprays (to be honest, the original Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater is my favourite) as they give skin that extra boost of glow and hydration in a no-frills way. They’re such a pleasure to use and the packaging is Insta-worthy too!
If you have sensitive skin and you’re worried about something with essential oils/fragrance, then I can HIGHLY recommend the Avène Thermal Spring Water mist. Another favourite of mine!
You all know I adore my hydrating serums, and this is the current one in my rotation. And it is BEAUTIFUL.
This serum is a light gel texture, sinks in within seconds, and keeps the hydration levels of your skin up. I use this morning and night, and I can truly feel the difference in my skin. There are 4 types of hyaluronic acid in this serum, along with 2 plant-based boosters that stimulate the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production.
Ever since I started getting serious with this serum and using it more consistently (I was worried about finishing it too fast, so was only using it every few days instead of daily). I’ve noticed a difference in my skin.
Moisture Surge is a year-round staple for me. I always have one in stock in my cupboard!
This gel-cream is one of the most intensely hydrating products I’ve tried, and while I don’t reach for it every single day, I use it a couple of times a week, when my skin feels like it could use a whack of moisture.
This pot only had a few more uses left at the time I took this photo, and I’ve since finished it – time for a repurchase!
A good facial oil is KEY in winter. It hydrates the skin, it’s richer than a regular serum and it leaves skin glowing.
This oil is fantastic for dehydrated skins that are still on the combo side of things. It feels light and it doesn’t leave a greasy layer on the skin, but rather absorbs fully, leaving skin feeling soft and smooth. In the morning I notice a massive difference when I’ve used this the night before – my skin beams with health.
Plus – it smells AMAZING!
I’ve previously mentioned that I worried this cream would be a little rich for me. It’s a super rich, nourishing cream designed for dry and sensitives skins – and my sensitive skin has come to love it deeply.
Post resurfacing facial, this is the one product I can say that truly made a big difference. The tiniest bit goes a long way, and my skin was comforted and nourished in one – it was like a blanket of love for my skin. I use it now a couple of times a week, either under makeup (when I know I’m setting with powder, or I don’t mind getting a little glowier than usual), or at night.
During the winter, I find exfoliation to be the most important thing in my skincare routine – I get rid of those dry patches of skin and make way for all of the hydrating goodness to penetrate and really do its job.
I feel like I’ve been raving constantly about the L’Oreal Smooth Sugars scrubs – packed with 3 fine sugars – and this Nourish one has been my favourite recently as the cocoa butter moisturises my skin at the same time. Plus – I’ve been using it on my lips at the same time, and my lips have never felt softer! the perfect winter skin scrub!
You can use this Moisture Stick on your face, lips, body and hair. And while I can’t say anything for using it on hair (I need to give that a whirl soon), I’ve used it on my cuticles, my lips AND around my nose and mouth when it’s felt a little tight and in need of a moisture boost.
It’s convenient, it’s super useful AND it works! Love this, and you can bet it’ll be coming away with me this weekend!
I’ve used this lip balm for a good number of years now, and I’m on my second pot. These jars contain an impressive amount of product, and last forever!
It’s incredibly thick, super nourishing and basically works as a lip mask, which is why I apply it every single night without fail. Packed with delicious honey, propolis and rich oils, it melts with your body heat into a luxe feeling balm, and I often use the excess on my cuticles. Wonderful stuff, and it’s made it into my winter skin routine multiple years in a row now.
