ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR

TESTED: Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation

Happy Monday everyone!  I thought I’d dive head in this week with a MUCH requested post – a review on my beloved Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation.

I have mentioned this foundation so many times on my blog and my social media that I almost felt that I didn’t need to do a full review.  You all already know I adore the stuff.  But did you know I’ve been using this foundation for OVER A DECADE????

Yes – you heard that right!  My mom bought me my first bottle in Matric, for my Matric dance.  From then, it wasn’t something I could easily afford, so mom would spoil me with a new bottle for either my birthday or Christmas.  At that point I didn’t wear foundation every day, and even if I did I’d only use a tiny amount, so a bottle would last me a year.

Since then, I’ve always ensured that I have a bottle in my collection.  I keep an eye on promotions, or I budget accordingly, as it is a much pricier, higher end product – but I believe that the quality speaks for itself.  I’m always on the hunt for quality, and sure you can find lower priced products that are still exceptionally good quality.  However, you most definitely get what you pay for when it comes to Estée Lauder Double Wear.

SO – let’s get into it!

PRODUCT

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup.  The foundation contains SPF 10.

It claims the following: –

  • 24 hour wear
  • Oil free and oil control
  • Transfer and waterproof
  • Flawless, natural and matte
  • A shade for every skin colour and tone

PACKAGING

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR

Estée Lauder Double Wear comes in a luxe glass bottle with a gold cap.  It doesn’t come with a pump, however you can purchase a pump specifically for it separately (I received mine on a promotion on the Estée Lauder South Africa site, where it came with my order, but I can’t for the life of me find it on there now).

One thing with the packaging I do have to mention.  I always loved how luxurious and expensive the heavy glass bottle and gold lid felt, and I was a little disappointed in the pump.  It doesn’t come with a lid over it, rather just a little soft plastic nozzle to cover the edge of the pump.  It’s also dark blue plastic, and while I do understand that this is still within the classic Estée Lauder colour scheme, the pump itself just detracted from the higher end feel for me.

Sure, it’s decent quality plastic, but it changes the look of the bottle, and I’ve found I prefer keeping the gold lid instead of using the pump.  I just ensure that my hands are freshly washed when I open the bottle (they should be anyway, please don’t apply makeup to your face with dirty hands guys, it’s SO unhygienic, even if it’s just you), and I pour a small amount onto the back of my hand.  I’ve used the product for long enough now that I know EXACTLY how much I need, whether I’m using a little for a fresh and natural cover, or I’m trying to achieve a glam, full coverage finish.

FORMULA

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR FOUNDATION

The formula of Estée Lauder Double Wear is a thin, runny liquid.  Don’t be fooled though – I know that it’s usually the thicker, creamier formulas that seem to be full coverage, but this baby gives a definite medium to full coverage with great ease.

The formula is also said to be a medium to full, buildable coverage.  You can easily sheer this out by using a little mixed with a hydrating primer, but a first and normal application will give you medium coverage.  It is most definitely buildable too.

TOP TIP – Don’t start building up coverage straight after that first layer.  If you want to increase the coverage, then wait a couple of minutes for the foundation to ‘set’.  Then go in on any areas that you require additional coverage.  You should do this as a rule with any foundation though, this isn’t exclusive to the Estée Lauder Double Wear.  If you don’t give it that time to settle down, you’ll just be buffing the first layer right off, and then DEFINITELY not building coverage.

SHADE RANGE

There are over 55 shades in the Estée Lauder Double Wear range! If I could on the SA site, it looks like 61 shades in total, although this could vary from country to country.

The best part, is that they offer from very light to very deep shades (something that is SO problematic in the makeup industry with foundations) and they offer shades that cover cool, warm and neutral undertones.

To be more specific, I have fair to light skin – however I have a warmer undertone.  I tan easily (well I used to when I ALLOWED myself to be exposed to the sun, these days I avoid it like the plague), and have more of a golden or slightly olive tone to my skin.  It can look pink on my face (from removing makeup or from irritation), but my skin is most definitely warmer toned.  I use the shade Sand (1W2) – that W stands for Warm.  If you have a cooler undertone (rosy or pink) you’ll need something with a C in the shade number.  If you have a more neutral undertone (not too pink, not too golden), choose something with N in the shade number.

I used to think that maybe I was more neutral, as my face could be a little pink, however I’d always end up looking ashy due to the neutral toned foundations.  It’s always best to get matched at an Estée Lauder counter, and then ask if they can give you 2 or 3 options as samples to take home.  Wear them in NATURAL light to get the best impression of which will work.

WEAR

This is me wearing my Estee Lauder Double Wear most recently to the Rubybox Rise Up event.

The Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation wears amazingly!  I wouldn’t know if it lives up to it’s 24 hour claim, as to be very honest I’ve never (nor would I) worn my makeup for 24 hours solid.  However, I know that if I have a function after work, and I don’t have time to go home and faff around with fixing or redoing my makeup – Double Wear is the way to go.

I can apply this foundation, I don’t have to set it with powder, and I can work a full day.  Before an event all I have to do is touch up a little blush and lipstick perhaps, but my foundation still looks fresh.

It also controls oil well – I don’t find my T-zone gets as greasy with Estée Lauder Double Wear as it does with other matte finish foundations.  On sweltering hot Durban days, perhaps I will have to blot my T-zone, but I still won’t need to touch up the actual product whatsoever.

WHERE FROM

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR FOUNDATION

You can purchase Estée Lauder Double Wear online on their website, as well as at the following stockists: –

PRICE

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR FOUNDATION

The Estée Lauder Double Wear retails for R625 (pricey, but as I mentioned it’s worth it), but it looks to be R600 on Takealot right now.

If price is an issue, just get matched at a counter, and then shop around online to see where is offering it at the best price.  Woolworths and Foschini often have beauty discounts up to 20% off, while Takealot and Superbalist VERY often have selected products on lower prices.

REPURCHASE

ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS.

As mentioned, I always have a bottle in my collection, and I’ll continue to purchase this until I die.  There is a reason why the Estée Lauder Double Wear is such a cult product.  It is my absolute holy grail foundations, and while there are many others I love to use (a beauty addict like me will never use just one foundation), this will always come out tops for me.

As they said on the Estée Lauder website: –

“For millions of women, it’s Double Wear or nothing. Put it on once and don’t think twice.”

This statement rings so true for me, and even more so for my mom.  She has tried so many foundations, yet ALWAYS goes back to Estée Lauder Double Wear!  I’d now love to try more from the Double Wear range – there are a number of different finish foundations, powders and concealers.
