We have some seriously great restaurants in KwaZulu Natal, and there’s a new kid on the block! Wish on Florida opened up recently, a restaurant with a strong Italian influence, and Hubby and I headed there on a Sunday afternoon for lunch this month.
First off, I’d like to touch on the topic of decor. This place is GORGEOUS! I won’t lie, a few of the images I’d seen floating around had made it look a bit too busy, but in reality it’s beautiful. A closed courtyard with a fountain (you can purchase special coins and flip them into the fountain for a wish), a champagne lounge and a closed-in section, all with different decor elements. Very luxe, very trendy, and generally a place you’d like to relax and be seen in!
As mentioned, the menu is definitely on the Italian side, with pizzas and pastas being the majority of the food. They do, however, have some lovely seafood and steak dishes on offer too – we saw some going out and all looked delicious.
Our waitron Brian suggested we try the Arichini (R69) to start – ricotta and rice balls with a smoked pepper and pepper dew sauce. Another thing to note is the staff – all are friendly and helpful, but we definitely hit the jackpot with Brian. He considered our tastes and what we were drinking, and the suggested a starter to share. I was sipping on a red wine blend, while Nick had an Old Fashioned, and both drinks were DELICIOUS with the Arichini. That sauce with the smoked pepper and pepper dew? Wow!
There are so many delicious wines and champagnes on offer to choose from (they have one of the biggest champagne and sparkling wine selections I’ve ever seen), and an amazing array of cocktails. I can imagine a lot of people would order a few different starters and drinks, and sit and enjoy a tapas style meal.
Both of us were in a pizza mood, and so we both dove straight into some of the pizza offerings from Wish on Florida. Hubs chose the Cranberry Chick (R99) with crispy chicken, brie and cranberry sauce on a thin crust (R30), while I opted for the Classic Margarita (R85) with mozzarella, roma tomatos, garlic and basil, on a New York Slice base (R70). We were also intrigued by the Deep Dish (R60), a Chicago-style deep dish pizza with chorizo, olives, ricotta, garlic and parmesan. I think we’ll be back for that!
What we loved about the Cranberry Chick is that usually brie and cranberry are paired with bacon – but the crispy chicken pieces were absolutely delicious, and the extra parmesan that the pizza was topped with was the cherry on top of a delicious pizza. The base could have been a bit thinner for a ‘thin crust’ option, but overall a very tasty meal.
The New York Slice base was SO good. Basically they just shape your entire pizza as a single giant slice – and for me this was heaven, as I’m a pizza crust lover! Crunchy and packed with great margarita flavour – I’d definitely order this again.
Sadly we had no room left for dessert, but we were so impressed by our overall experience at Wish on Florida that I think we’ll definitely be back! We’re already planning a return visit for that Deep Dish pizza, and we are determined to go back and have a tapas style Sunday lunch – with at least 2 portions of the Arichini!
