Budget Friendly Bodycare

Budget Friendly Bodycare

This current Covid-19 pandemic is really causing havoc with our economy.  Most of us are living on tighter budgets, so I’ve started putting together a budget-friendly series.  This will be the first in a series of 3 posts – bodycare, skincare and makeup.  Today, let’s chat all things bodycare!

Admittedly it’s easier to find budget friendly bodycare products that work well.  However, while there are some products that do the job sufficiently, there are also some AMAZING products that do the job just as well, if not BETTER than higher end ones.  And those are what I’m going to talk to you about today.

BEST BUDGET FRIENDLY BODYCARE

BODY WASH

DOVE-PURELY-PAMPERING-BODY WASH

Dove Purely Pampering Shea Butter & Warm Vanilla Body Wash R69.99 for 750ml

I love all of the Dove body washes, but there is something about this comforting scent that just sings to me.  I have sensitive skin that is easily irritated by harsh fragrances, but I’ve never had a problem with any of the variants from Dove.

They’re gentle, they smell so luxurious, and they do the job without irritating or stripping my skin.  In fact, my skin always feels softer when I use them.

BODYCARE FROM AFRICA ARGAN EXFOLIATING SHOWER GEL

Bodycare From Africa Argan Exfoliating Shower Gel R69.95 for 250ml

If I’m honest I never find gels with a little exfoliation in to be very effective in terms of a scrub, but I LOVE this as a shower gel.  It doesn’t leave my skin dry (thanks to the vitamin E and argan oil) and it smells INCREDIBLE.  I’m obsessed with the whole Argan range from Bodycare From Africa, and can’t wait for them to start production again (they halted to produce sanitisers) so I can order some of the scrub and hand cream again, as it’s SUPERB.

What I love most about this is that it smells really expensive and luxurious, yet everything in the range is affordable.

NIVEA IRRESISTIBLY SMOOTH SHOWER CREAM
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Nivea Irresistibly Smooth Shower Cream R59.99 for 500ml

This Nivea shower cream genuinely leaves my skin feeling smoother.  It’s packed with shea butter and has a very gentle scent to it – smells like classic Nivea to me.

A basic shower cream, but a very softening, hydrating one, and one I’ll happily repurchase time and time again.

OH SO HEAVENLY DOUBLE THE YUM SHOWER GEL

Oh So Heavenly Double The Yum Bubblegum Body Wash R54.99 for 720ml

GUYS.  If you want to get in touch with your inner kiddie, this is the way to go!  It smells exactly like a huge bubblegum milkshake from Wimpy, all topped with whipped cream and sprinkles.

That being said, the fragrance doesn’t linger overwhelming on my skin, so it doesn’t leave me smelling like sweets all day, and it doesn’t irritate my skin at all.  It simply enhances my shower time, and leaves me feeling giddily happy after each use.

NIVEA PAMPERING SHOWER OIL
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Nivea Pampering Shower Oil R61.99 for 200ml

This is one of the most luxurious drugstore shower products ever.

If you’re not one for body oils, never fear.  You squeeze this beautifully fragranced oil into your hands and lather it up.  It foams and cleanses your skin while still leaving it super nourished YET not greasy at all.

An absolute treat for winter time!

DOVE BEAUTY CREAM BAR
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Dove Beauty Bar R13.99 for a single bar

Ah the Dove soap bar.  Not a day goes by without one of these in our shower.

Dove is the only solid soap we keep in our shower, as it’s 1/4 moisturising cream and cleanses mine and Hubby’s skin without drying it out.  We buy these in the bulk boxes of 4 soaps every month, and we are NEVER without them.

BODY MOISTURISER

MIXA SOOTHING BODY LOTION

Mixa Soothing Body Lotion R56.99 for 400ml

HOLY. GRAIL.

I cannot tell you when I was last WITHOUT this body lotion.  It’s soothing, it’s nourishing, it’s perfect for my skin year round (although I’d love a richer cream in a tub like the other 2 variants) and it genuinely improves the bumps on my arms that pop up when I use too many fragranced products (or each too much bread).

I have raved about this for so long, you’ll see it popping up in my site everywhere!

NIVEA FIRMING Q10 BODY CREAM

Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body Cream R82.99 for 300ml

While I do NOT believe for a second that a lotion will remove every inch of cellulite (I mean, we can dream but it isn’t likely) – I DO believe using a good lotion and some massage can improve on the firmness and youthfulness of your skin.

This Nivea body lotion definitely made the skin feel a little tighter, but the most important part for me was how it nourished my skin so intensely.  It’s rich but doesn’t leave a greasy layer (although still more of a ‘winter lotion’ in my head), and really made a difference to my dry body skin.  And trust me, my body is SO dry all year round, yet the second winter creeps in, that goes up several notches.  This cream made a massive difference!

JOHNSON'S VITA RICH BODY OIL

Johnson’s Vita-Rich Firming Body Oil R87.96 for 150ml

I’ve used both the Red Berry and Green Tea variants, but the Red Berry always calls me back.  It’s sweet and fruity without smelling like a teenager’s berry body mist.  It’s divine!

I love the spray on these bottles, as I can spritz it onto my back (because let’s just be blunt here – I’m not a flexible gymnast who can massage her whole back with lotions and oils).  In fact I actually love to keep a bottle of this in the shower, and when I’m done washing I’ll turn the taps off and apply this to damp skin.  Guys – really massage it in.  Not only is it great for your skin and your circulation, but by the time you towel off any remaining water, you won’t feel greasy, just gloriously relaxed and nourished.

Plus – I could DEFINITELY see a difference in the firmness of my skin after using a full bottle of this.  I’m not saying it will get rid of every lump and bump, but my skin felt tighter and more youthful.  This could be the oil, my extra pampering efforts at massaging it in, but most probably both.

OH SO HEAVENLY BODY BUTTER

Oh So Heavenly Mermaid At Heart Body Butter R44.99 for 200ml

This was one of the goodies in the Clicks Lockdown Self Care Beauty Box, and I was thrilled.  I love the pretty packaging and the scent is absolutely gorgeous – yet I never expected to fall in love with the formula as much as I did.

It is SUPERB, rich, buttery and so so nourishing to my dry winter skin.  The scent is girly and feminine – something that even my 33 year old self enjoys.

I am a big fan of the body butters from The Body Shop, and this is the closest I’ve found to their formula, in a much more affordable price range.  I’m so keen to put more of the butters to the test!

BODY SCRUB

 BODYCARE FROM AFRICA SALT SCRUB

Bodycare From Africa Marrakech Argan Salt Scrub R84.95 for 550g

GUYS.  Legit the best body scrub I have EVER used.  And the price makes it even better!

These salt scrubs are creamy and both gentle on skin, yet scrubby enough to leave your skin soft and smooth after just one use.  I love how they’re packed with oils too, so your skin is moisturised and left with a soft, fragrance after each use – yet not greasy at all!  Plus, I often get left with a little irritation from fragranced oils, and my skin hasn’t given me a moment’s hassle from these.

I’ve used the Cape Olive (sadly discontinued), Savannah Shea (lovely) and Marrakech Argan (absolute favourite), and they have a few others in the same formula.  Cannot recommend enough.

CARIBBEAN TAN CINNAMON & COCONUT SKIN SMOOTHING EXFOLIATOR
Image from www.dischem.co.za

Caribbean Tan Cinnamon & Coconut Skin Smoothing Exfoliator R64.95 for 450ml

I haven’t used this scrub in a while, but it’s yet another affordable and incredibly effective body scrub!  I think this may be my favourite product the Caribbean Tan brand makes, and the smell is GORGEOUS.

The best way to get rid of dead skin cells, nourish your skin AND prep for self tan.

HAND CARE

MAVALA NOURISHING MASSAGE OIL FOR NAILS

Mavala MavaDerma Nourishing Massage Oil For Nails R159.96 for 10ml

This oil has been absolutely when my cuticles and nails have been in a terrible state.  I suffer with dry hands and cuticles at the best of times, but over the last few years there have been some really bad bouts, and the constant washing/sanitising doesn’t help at all.

This oil feels lovely and rich, and I keep this next to my bed to massage into my cuticles just before bed.  I leave it to then soak in for a few minutes, before applying a good hand cream on top.

I actually feel like this not only has helped my dry cuticles, but the extra nourishment has helped strengthen my nails a bit too!

SOURCE ROOTS OF NATURE WILD ROSE & WHITE BLOSSOMS MOISTURISING HAND CREAM

Source Roots Of Nature Wild Rose & White Blossoms Moisturising Hand Cream R31.99 for 100ml

This is a newbie in my collection, as I only received it during lockdown – but I absolutely had to include it.  I mean, look at the price!  And it’s sensational!

It’s vegan, it smells so feminine and soft, and I am actually keeping it on my desk at work now, as it is the perfect post-washing/post-sanitising hand treatment, as I feel it makes such a difference when my hands are feeling tight and dry.  In these difficult times, it’s also so nice to have such a lovely, special treat to pep up my spirits.

BODYCARE FROM AFRICA MARRAKECH ARGAN HAND AND NAIL CREAM

Bodycare From Africa Marrakech Argan Hand & Nail Cream R49.95 for 100ml

In true Shiv style, this hand cream is already finished – cut open and cleaned out so there isn’t a single drop left.  It is SUBLIME.

As with everything else I’ve tried from Bodycare From Africa, I fell head over heels in love with the formula of this hand cream.  It just feels so luxe!  The Marrakech Argan scent is just probably one of my favourite in the world – they should TOTALLY make a body mist with it!

I cannot get over the price of the Bodycare From Africa products, as they are so beautifully priced and such incredible quality.  You can find them either on their website (as linked above), but Takealot also stock some of them!

LUSH LEMONY FLUTTER CUTICLE CREAM

Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter R160 for 50g

This tub of wonder is described as a cuticle butter, but it can be used for so much more than just dry cuticles.  I’ve used it on dry elbows, all over dry hands just before bed, dry heels, it just is INTENSELY nourishing and rich, and smells like you’ve cracked open a jar of lemon curd.

That being said, as a cuticle butter it does an amazing job on dry cuticles – I should know as after a few horrible hormonal treatments, my cuticles have been left ravaged.  This and the Mavala oil were the only things that truly made a difference!

PALMERS SHEA FORMULA RAW SHEA HAND CREAM
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Palmer’s Shea Formula Raw Shea Hand Cream R37.95 for 60g

I haven’t actually bought this hand cream for some time, but it came to my mind immediately when I was putting a list together for this post.

The Palmer’s products are known for being rich and buttery, and this Shea hand cream is indeed just that.  I love how it’s a natural formula with no nasties and packed with natural shea butter – plus it smells INSANELY gorgeous, almost a very light, gentle vanilla scent.

I’ve tried all of the Palmer’s hand creams, but this is the one I’ve repurchased of all of them.  My absolute favourite.  In fact, it also comes in the form of a body lotion that’s a little on the lighter side, which is also fabulous!

MIXA RESTORING HAND CREAM

Mixa Restoring Hand Cream R59.99 for 100ml

I was gifted the 2 Mixa hand creams when they were launched last year, and absolutely loved both – however I’ve since repurchased this Restoring Hand Cream again at least twice.

It’s buttery and thick, a little richer than I usually go when it comes to hand creams, but your skin laps that nourishment up in no time.  My hands just soak it up!  Better yet, it’s not one of those hand creams that (once absorbed) you can no longer feel after 15min.  It leaves my hands feeling moisturised and happy for ages after I’ve applied it.

A DEFINITE must now that we’re layering sanitisers on, and washing our hands so often.

SORBET SALON PRO MOISTURISING HAND AND NAIL TREATMENT WITH HYALURONIC ACID
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Sorbet Salon Pro Moisturising Hand & Nail Treatment R54.99 for 75ml

I was lucky enough to be gifted a tube of this glorious hand cream in the Clicks Christmas Beauty Box last year.  Sadly, my phone died with the images I took of this and I’m still trying to desperately find any backups I may have made.

I found this hand and nail treatment to be intensely hydrating, yet completely non-greasy – something that is actually pretty hard to find when it comes to hand creams.  It has a beautiful fragrance to it, and left my skin and nails happy as can be!

SELF TANNER

LE TAN COCONUT WATER SELF TANNING FOAM

Le Tan Coconut Water Self Tanning Foam R255 for 200ml

While this is on the pricier side of ‘drugstore’ self tanners, it’s by far one of the cheapest tanners I will spend money on.  I do usually prefer to spend a bit more on my self tanners as I don’t apply them weekly, but more for occasions or events.

I love that it offers an olive-toned tan (evident from the slight green tone in the colour guide of the foam), and that it applies easily and naturally.  It’s really easy to blend and the tan can be left on for 1 hour (light tan), 2 hours (medium tan) and 3 hours (darker tan).  In my opinion this is the BEST brand for very fair skins as even leaving this on for 3 hours I’ve never gone too dark and nor has my tan looked fake or over processed.

This tanner also fades so beautifully on my skin, with no patchiness, almost as if it were a real tan!

CARIBBEAN TAN TANNING SPRITZER SHADE B
Image from www.clicks.co.za

Caribbean Tanning Spritzer Shade B R99.99 for 200ml

I have to be honest – I do generally gravitate towards higher end tanners as in my opinion you do get what you pay for when it comes to a good self tanner.

BUT – if I’m going to buy an affordable one, it will ONLY be this.  I’ve tried all of the tanning offerings from Caribbean Tan, and the aerosol can is over in not even 2 uses (great for a once off occasion, but not much more), the foam leaves me streaky and the wipes, just don’t even get me started.

This spritzer is very similar in application, and lack of streaking to my higher end liquid tanners.  I find shade A is far too light for me (I’m pale, but my sister is a little paler and likes shade A), and shade C turns me too orange.  Shade B I leave on for about 6 hours and then shower off, and while it’s not QUITE the olive-hue I usually go for, for R100 I’m very happy with how it comes out.

BONUS – it doesn’t wash off in patches, but very naturally, and it lasts a solid week on my skin.
